Audition for the SAG-AFTRA Radio Plays

Please note: The online registration link opens at 10 a.m., Monday, March 4. Please do not attempt to register prior to 10 a.m. RSVPs made prior to 10 a.m., March 4, will not be accepted. Registrations will not be accepted over the phone. Members will only be able to sign up via the online registration link once the submission fields open at 10 a.m., Monday, March 4 until capacity is reached.

Please Note: The performance is on Wenesday, March 27. If selected, your presence will be needed for most of the afternoon and evening only on March 27.

My Favorite Husband
For the March radio play, SAG-AFTRA Radio Players will perform a selection from My Favorite Husband, the radio series that inspired the famous television show I Love Lucy. This early episode from 1948 is called "Knitting Baby Booties" and features the happy couple Liz and George (known in this episode as "The Cugats") going through hi-jinx and hilarity over a new baby.

Auditions will be open to all members in good standing. Please remember, this is RADIO. Looks are not considered, only the tenor, timber and expertise of your voice.
 
The performance will take place at the Autry Museum of the American West Wells Fargo Theatre in Griffith Park. If selected, your presence will be needed for most of the afternoon and evening only on March 27. Other rehearsals will be scheduled around cast members’ availability.

If selected, more details will be provided for rehearsals. This is an unpaid stage performance of an Old Time Radio show presented to a live audience. Casting will be based on vocal quality and characterizations. We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting. Conservatory: A Conversation with Casting Consultant Naomi Robin

Naomi shares her insights into the casting process, drawing on her 13 years of experience as casting director of Theatre J. For many years, Naomi was a professional stage actress based in NYC, working all over the U.S. and in Canada. She followed that with many more years as a SAG/AFTRA V.O. talent, doing thousands of spots and long-form narrations.

Conservatory: Getting Material for Your Demo Reel

This one-hour workshop will cover ways you can obtain editable copies of your work that have aired on television, appeared in film, or been made available through streaming services so that you can keep your demo reel and online casting profiles up to date. The discussion will focus on companies that provide these services as well as how to use available technology to secure your work on your own.

Keith Flippen has been a film/TV actor for 28 years and a SAG member since 1997. He is also owner and chief instructor of Meisner Technique and Camera Acting at The Actors’ Place in Norfolk, VA, graduate of VA Tech, former student at the Eugene O’Neil Theatre Center and the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music, and Film, and former US Administrator of the Russian-American Theatre in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Minsk.

Be present, thrilling, memorable, and relaxed! Learn tools for specificity and emotional connection, ways to activate and personalize the text, stay truthful, support bold choices and make auditioning a joy from choosing material to table talk. Bring two copies of a monologue you are working on (no need to memorize).

Naomi Jacobson, a professional actor working in the DC area for the last 25 years, is an Affiliated Artist with the Shakespeare Theatre and a Woolly Mammoth Theatre company member. Credits include The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, Signature, Studio, Center Stage, The Goodman Theatre, The Guthrie, Cincinnati Playhouse, Milwaukee Rep and the Berkshire Theatre Festival. Her TV/film work includes Homicide, Her Father’s Eyes for A&E, and narration for PBS, NPR, Discovery Channel, Smithsonian and numerous commercials and industrials. Jacobon’s received three Helen Hayes Awards (15 nominations), a Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship, the Hopkins Anderson Award for Excellence in Theatre, and an Individual Artist Grant from the D.C. Arts Commission. She spearheaded the Actors Arena through Arena Stage, a continuing education program for professional actors. Business of Acting: The Inside Scoop on Casting

SAG-AFTRA National Native Americans Committee in partnership with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation presents a two-part informative, interactive panel discussion and workshop on the acting industry taught by casting directors, professional actors and other industry experts. With a focus on issues important to Native American actors, the panel-workshop is open to all ethnicities.  The event is free for SAG-AFTRA members.
 
Workshop panelists include actor Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Avatar), casting director Rene Haynes (The Revenant, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse & New Moon), casting director Kathryn Zamora-Benson (Chambers, Ozark, and Atlanta), actor DeLanna Studi (Edge of America) and others TBA.
 
The panel discussion with industry experts will give an overview of auditioning, headshots, resumes, audition tapes, social media resources for actors and more.

Audition Opportunity:  Also, as part of this panel-workshop, a pre-selected group from the audience will have an opportunity to practice auditioning with on-the-spot feedback from the workshop leaders and casting directors.  See submission instructions below.

A workshop casting director will select a diverse group of participants from a wide range of ethnicities, ages and acting experience.  You will be notified in advance of the event if you are selected to audition, and you will receive sides to practice.  If you are not selected, you will still have the opportunity to drop off your headshot in person at the event for the casting directors.

If you haven't been to an orientation in a while, step up to bat, get in the game! It's not just for new members, it’s for ALL members. In this three-hour program, you will gain a plethora of valuable information jam-packed with helpful hints, facts and expertise to motivate and guide your journey. Learn how to USE the union as both an ally and resource to propel your career.

Attendance is required for the entire meeting to receive a Conservatory application outside of the open enrollment period. This meeting is only open to paid-up SAG-AFTRA members in good standing. No guests are allowed. Parents/guardians of performers under 18 years old are welcome.

  • All meetings are approximately 3-hours long.
  • Validated parking is available in the SAG-AFTRA Plaza parking lot - enter off of Curson Ave.
  • Attendance is required for the entire meeting to receive a Conservatory application outside of the open enrollment period.

Commercial Acting in LA: A Session Director’s Guide with Shaan Sharma

Shaan Sharma, working actor, veteran commercial casting session director, acting coach, Backstage contributor, and SAG-AFTRA Conservatory Committee member will be sharing game-changing information and strategies to successfully pursue a commercial and on-camera acting career. Learn how to optimize every variable in your control to support high-level creative output.

He will cover topics such as the huge differences between auditioning and casting for the theatrical and commercial sides of the business, training and development, having a support network, nervousness and confidence, the entire process of casting through booking, online casting services, headshots, reels, branding, marketing, representation and so much more. You’ll even pick up a few insider auditioning and casting tips. Additionally, Sharma will expand upon his “4 Steps to Becoming a Working Actor” as well as his, “The 4 Pillars of a Joyful Acting Journey.” To supplement this information, he will provide a FREE PDF copy of his book, Commercial Acting in L.A.: A Session Director’s Guide, as a gift to all attendees.
