Shaan Sharma, working actor, veteran commercial casting session director, acting coach, Backstage contributor, and SAG-AFTRA Conservatory Committee member will be sharing game-changing information and strategies to successfully pursue a commercial and on-camera acting career. Learn how to optimize every variable in your control to support high-level creative output.

He will cover topics such as the huge differences between auditioning and casting for the theatrical and commercial sides of the business, training and development, having a support network, nervousness and confidence, the entire process of casting through booking, online casting services, headshots, reels, branding, marketing, representation and so much more. You’ll even pick up a few insider auditioning and casting tips. Additionally, Sharma will expand upon his “4 Steps to Becoming a Working Actor” as well as his, “The 4 Pillars of a Joyful Acting Journey.” To supplement this information, he will provide a FREE PDF copy of his book, Commercial Acting in L.A.: A Session Director’s Guide, as a gift to all attendees.

Atlanta EGOTS Exhibit featuring the SAG Awards

The Atlanta Local of SAG-AFTRA is set to host the first-ever Atlanta EGOTS Exhibit inside the Tony® award-winning Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. In honor of the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards®, the exhibit will feature the SAG Awards Actor® as one of five top American performance awards, alongside the Emmy®, Grammy®, Oscar®, and Tony® awards.
 
The Atlanta EGOTS Exhibit will offer free admission to the general public. Attendees will be encouraged to take pictures with the awards and post to their personal social media accounts using the hashtag #sagawards. The location of the exhibit is appropriate because Atlanta is also home to Turner, the parent company of the SAG Awards broadcast partners. The 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be nationally simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
 
The exhibit will feature five awards with Georgia-based recipients, including:

  • The 2018 Southeast Chapter Governors Emmy Award, presented to Ric Reitz in tandem with Melissa Goodman, Wilbur Fitzgerald, and Shay Griffin for outstanding achievement and dedication to broadcast television.
  • The 1985 Grammy for Best Classical Album, awarded to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for “Berlioz: Requiem.”
  • The 1962 Oscar for Best Original Song, awarded to Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini for “Moon River,” which appeared in the 1961 motion picture Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
  • The 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award, presented to Alliance Theatre.
  • The SAG Awards Actor® statuette, emblematic of the award-winning cast of Stranger Things and the importance of Georgia as a filming location. 


Acting for Military Veterans

Taught by Rachel Bailit, this workshop is designed for military veteran actors. In this workshop we will discuss the wonderful possibilities and rewards of being a military veteran actor. Topics will include:

  • Using your unique self and experiences as military veteran in your work
  • How to create a life to support your acting career.
  • Training and preparation to become an actor.
  • Marketing yourself as an actor and military veteran.
  • How to create authentically unique choices in auditions
  • "Warm Readings" How to warm-up a script making by making specific choices. Actors should bring a two copies of short scene (two pages maximum). Scenes will be exchanged and actors will have a chance to get up and read. Brief supportive feedback/suggestions will be given.

Rachel Bailit is an actress and faculty member at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. She also teaches at The Getty Museum and at Dreamworks Animation. Rachel is a member of The Los Angeles Military Personnel and Families Support Committee at SAG-AFTRA.

Radio Players Gear Up for Holiday Show

The SAG-AFTRA Senior Radio Players are presenting their 93rd evening of live radio recreations with Holiday Potpourri on Dec. 6 at the Chicago Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater.

This holiday presentation is a mixture of goodies: comedy and music, with a sprinkling of trials, tribulations and laughter. It features the classic radio presentations Easy Aces: Jane Goes into the Christmas Card Business and The Bickersons episode The Honeymoon Is Over – John’s Operation. The show is directed by Senior Radio Players performer Guy Barile. Doors open at 6 p.m. and show time is 7 p.m. Remember, it’s free.

SAG-AFTRA member Tim Dadabo is back, this time with a partner in crime, Kevin Theis, to take the mystery out of recording voiceover from home. 

In our last series, we covered what’s needed to record from home. This time, Dadabo and Theis will cover setup and recording with your software. Dadabo will cover setting up and using Twisted Wave, Theis will cover setting up and using Audacity. 
 
If your equipment is mobile (I/O boxes, USB or “regular” mics, and laptops or tablets) please bring that equipment with you. In an effort to give fair time to all, please make sure your software is installed and working properly, as we will not have time to walk you through that process.
