Audiobooks is a $1 billion dollar industry and the one of the fastest growing areas of SAG-AFTRA covered work. Come learn from Ron Butler, SAG-AFTRA professional audiobook narrator and coach and Richard Larkin, SAG-AFTRA Associate Executive Director/Labor Counsel about what it takes to work as an audiobook narrator. Butler and Larkin will cover everything from getting started, home studio basics, general rate and union contract information and more.

About Ron Butler

Ron Butler is an LA-based SAG-AFTRA performer with over a hundred film, theater and television credits, including an IFP Award for his work in HBO’s Everyday People. He is a multiple Earphones Award winning narrator and multiple Audie and SOVAS Award nominee. His titles have made annual “Best Of” lists across multiple genres, and Audiofile Magazine consistently describes his work as superb, expressive and nuanced. He is a member of the Atlantic Theater Company and an adjunct professor at Pace University

About Richard Larkin

Richard Larkin is the Associate Executive Director/Labor Counsel in the News and Broadcast Department of SAG-AFTRA. He has been organizing, negotiating and administering audiobook contracts since 2008. In addition to his audiobook responsibilities, Larkin is also responsible for the negotiation, enforcement and administration of broadcasts agreements in New York and nationally, including the Network News Agreements. Larkin has been employed with AFTRA and now SAG-AFTRA since May, 1983. He received a BA from Boston College in 1979 and a JD from St. John’s University in 1982.

Cost: SAG-AFTRA Nevada Conservatory membership: $40/year (May 1, 2019 - April 30, 2020) or $20/workshop for paid-up members through April 30, 2020. All others: $80/year (May 1, 2019 - April 30, 2020) or $20/workshop

Tax Returns and the Working Actor with Sandra Karas, Esq.

Confused or overwhelmed at tax time? The new tax law has brought many changes to those in the entertainment industry. This live video conference conservatory, held in conjunction with the NY Local MORE Committee, will give you the information you need to properly file your tax return. You’ll have the opportunity to ask a tax authority ALL your questions about the often confusing and maddening world of taxes.

Class size limited to 18 members.

Sandra Karas is a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA and an attorney in private practice in the areas of tax, estates, trusts, contracts and business law. She is also a working actor and Secretary-Treasurer of Actors’ Equity Association. Karas also currently serves as the site coordinator of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program in New York and has been affiliated with VITA as a pro bono preparer and instructor for more than 30 years. She holds licenses in the areas of tax accounting, securities, investments and law, and is admitted to practice in all New York State courts as well the Federal District Court, United State Tax Court and the United States Supreme Court.
