Acting for Film and Television with Darcy Marta

This class uses short scenes or monologues to develop an understanding of how to prepare for work on a film set, handle close-up and repeated takes, and access your emotional fullness. The class will also explore blocking scenes, repeating scenes for continuity, and combine artistic expression with technical precision. You may bring a monologue you know fully or have been working on or Darcy will give you a short scene to work with. Please also feel free to bring props or costume with your monologue if you would like to work with that on camera.

Class size: Up to 25 students

Darcy Marta is an award-winning actor, director and producer — and an instructor for over 35 years. While she worked professionally as an actor in film and television she kept her roots alive in theater by directing, acting and producing shows in Los Angeles and New York City. She was an original member of the Friends and Artists Theatre Company in Los Angeles, and later the Artistic Director of the Inside Art Theatre Co. in New York City. Marta was also involved behind the camera in video production where she filmed live shows and documentaries for various production companies. She has taught acting in Los Angeles, the Bay Area and in New York City at the Lee Strasberg Institute and New York University.

CSA Inclusion & Diversity Presents L.A. Senior Actors Town Hall

As part of their Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion in Casting initiative, Casting Society of America is hosting a Senior Actors Town Hall in Los Angeles with support from the SAG-AFTRA National Seniors Committee. This current town hall is for a much-needed conversation about the inclusion of senior performers, and those 55+, to better access job opportunities.

The Casting Society of America’s Inclusion and Diversity Committee has been working on amazing programming including nationwide town halls for underrepresented communities in the media for the past several years.

Self-Taping Seminar in Gulfport

The self-taping trend can be both exciting when auditioning for roles when you’re not in town and daunting if you don’t know what is needed or expected. Whichever way you feel, this seminar is designed to help you capture your best performance with tips about equipment needed, lighting, sound, framing, readers and a demonstration of different setups.

The seminar will be led by SAG-AFTRA member Summer Selby. Drawing from her 29 years of experience as a film, TV, radio and industrial film actor, she will share steps you can take to improve your self-tape auditions and answer your questions.

Talk Story with The Sande Alessi Casting Team

The Hawaii Local is hosting an informal talk story session with the Sande Alessi casting team. Shayne Hartigan and the Sande Alessi team are providing background casting services for Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum PI. They will be available to meet our Union Performers and answer any questions. This is not an open call.

Shari Carlson coaches individuals within a group setting to become masters of their instrument. She has been involved in the entertainment business as an actor, director, casting director and producer for over 30 years in Hollywood and San Francisco. A successful entrepreneur, Shari is also the Creative Director and founder of the Best Actors (in a) Film Festival established in San Francisco. This niche festival is focused on rewarding talented actors for their creative performances. Shari has owned and operated the production company, Imaginative Productions, since 2006, producing award winning music videos, films and plays.

Sally Clawson, owner of Voice One Training, has over 20 years of experience as a voice teacher, speech coach, actor, and performer. A former professional dancer, Ms. Clawson toured internationally with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company. After a hip injury, she took a day job answering phones, discovered her voice, and began studying at Voice One.

Sally now teaches classes and workshops in voice, acting, presenting and performing all over the Bay Area, including Berkeley Repertory School of Theater, Google Arts, and California Shakespeare Theater. In addition, Sally is a certified executive coach through the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, and is the annual emcee at the Dreamforce conference hosted by Salesforce.

Sally’s voiceover performances include: Yoplait, Clorox, Toyota, Old Navy, McDonalds, Pixar, Apple, Google, Microsoft, EA Games, Telltale Games and Lucas Film to name a few.

SAG-AFTRA is inviting all members who work the SAG-AFTRA Television & Theatrical Contract to the upcoming San Francisco-Northern California Wages and Working Conditions Committee meeting.

Join your fellow members to discuss issues you’d like to see addressed in the upcoming Television & Theatrical Contracts negotiations. Your participation is vital!

The Background Actors On Set Workshop with Lucrecia Sarita Russo, Charlie Holliday and Don Black

May 15, 2019 - 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM PDT

Where: SAG-AFTRA San Francisco-Northern California Local office, 350 Sansome Street, Suite 900, San Francisco (Cross streets are Sansome and Sacramento).

Class Description: The Background Actors Onset Workshop will help to prepare the Background Performers for Principal Work. This workshop will cover "On-Set Exercises and Practical Scene Exercises." There will be a question and answer period to follow.

Note: Class size is limited to 20 participants max.

Participants will be randomly selected from those who respond, with preference being given to those who have not attended Conservatory events within the past 3 months.

As a courtesy to members on the waiting list, if you have reserved a space in this workshop and cannot attend, please cancel your reservation by Friday, May 10. Failure to do so may result in the inability to attend future workshops.

Lucrecia Sarita Russo is a member of SAG-AFTRA and in her ninth year serving on the San Francisco-Northern California Local Conservatory Committee. Lucrecia majored in the performing arts at Santa Monica City College. She taught acting for “Deslie Cashman’s School of Dramatic Arts” and “The Russ Lewis School of Drama”. Her studies include online master classes with Jodie Foster and Ron Howard. Her experience includes personal performance as well as casting for film, theater, television, commercials and booking major musical artists nationwide.

Charlie Holliday is a member of SAG-AFTRA, former member of Actors' Equity Association, and is a working actor who has appeared in more than sixty movies and television programs. His recent credits include Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter and the Hallmark Movies of the Week The Christmas Card and Out of the Woods. Television credits include the mini-series Gone But Not Forgotten, Quantum Leap, General Hospital, and many more. In addition to his film and television work, Charlie has acted and directed in a wide range of stage productions. Charlie also teaches film and TV acting and directing and is owner/director of the Mosaic Acting Studio in Rancho Cordova, CA where he also conducts classes and has been voted Sacramento’s Outstanding Training Resource for Actors. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco-Northern California Local of SAG-AFTRA, and is the union’s liaison with the Northern California film commissioners. Charlie is also a partner in Black-Holliday-Snow Productions.

Don Black is a SAG-AFTRA member and a highly skilled producer and director of photography with over 30 years television and movie shooting experience. Don has a talented eye for directing and blocking scenes and is able to save valuable time on the set with the actors and crew during principal photography. Don’s production experience makes him prepared to overcome challenges and meet goals every day on the set or during class room instruction.
