On May 8, the SAG-AFTRA Michigan Local Board gathered to celebrate Jayne Bower on the occasion of her retirement.
Bower spent four decades as a union broadcaster at stations in Michigan and California.
She helped to organize the first bargaining unit at WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit and later served as president of the SAG-AFTRA Michigan Local and chair of the SAG-AFTRA Broadcast Steering Committee.
When her career as a broadcaster ended, Bower joined the SAG-AFTRA Chicago Local as a broadcast business representative, working with members at stations in Michigan, Indiana and Minnesota. Her experiences as a member and a union staffer were especially valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic as she served on a labor-management committee tasked with drafting safety procedures for broadcast stations.
In retirement, Bower plans to take on the most important role of her life: grandmother.
