In this workshop, the versatile Bill Ratner will give you his take on working with promo and trailer copy. Bill is one of America’s most-heard voices on movie trailers, TV promos, documentaries, commercials, games & cartoons. We are thrilled that he will teach this workshop for our conservatory again, connecting with us via Zoom from his booth in Los Angeles. Participants will take part in the Bethesda office.

Bill is the original voice of “Flint” on G.I. Joe, Robot Chicken and Family Guy. He is an eight-time winner of The Moth Storytelling SLAMs. His stories are featured on National Public Radio. He serves on the Advisory Board of SAG-AFTRA Foundation/Don La Fontaine Voiceover Lab.

Conservatory: Voice Actor 101

Learn what it takes to become a voice actor in this workshop, presented by James Lewis. The workshop will cover demo creation and formatting, voiceovers as a business, marketing, branding, casting sites and more. James Lewis is eager to share his extensive knowledge and experience of the voiceover industry with the SAG-AFTRA Conservatory.

Lewis is an award-winning SAG-AFTRA performer and has appeared on national TV shows such as HBO's The Wire, Fox’s America's Most Wanted, The I.D. channel’s Evil Twins and has been seen in hundreds of commercials including national spots for Ricola, CarMax, Airhead’s Bites Candy, Medicare, Rolaids and many more. As a voice actor, Lewis has recorded over 600 audiobooks and voiced characters for both Marvel and DC Comics as well as video games such as Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls and Street Hoops. Lewis is the Executive Producer for Talktime Voiceovers a voiceover demo production company that also provides coaching and training. Talktime has worked with and produced demos for many of the leading talents in the DMV.

Conservatory: Getting Material for Your Demo Reel

This one-hour workshop will cover ways you can obtain editable copies of your work that have aired on television, appeared in film, or been made available through streaming services so that you can keep your demo reel and online casting profiles up to date. The discussion will focus on companies that provide these services as well as how to use available technology to secure your work on your own.

Keith Flippen has been a film/TV actor for 28 years and a SAG member since 1997. He is also owner and chief instructor of Meisner Technique and Camera Acting at The Actors’ Place in Norfolk, VA, graduate of VA Tech, former student at the Eugene O’Neil Theatre Center and the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music, and Film, and former US Administrator of the Russian-American Theatre in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Minsk.

Be present, thrilling, memorable, and relaxed! Learn tools for specificity and emotional connection, ways to activate and personalize the text, stay truthful, support bold choices and make auditioning a joy from choosing material to table talk. Bring two copies of a monologue you are working on (no need to memorize).

Naomi Jacobson, a professional actor working in the DC area for the last 25 years, is an Affiliated Artist with the Shakespeare Theatre and a Woolly Mammoth Theatre company member. Credits include The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, Signature, Studio, Center Stage, The Goodman Theatre, The Guthrie, Cincinnati Playhouse, Milwaukee Rep and the Berkshire Theatre Festival. Her TV/film work includes Homicide, Her Father’s Eyes for A&E, and narration for PBS, NPR, Discovery Channel, Smithsonian and numerous commercials and industrials. Jacobon’s received three Helen Hayes Awards (15 nominations), a Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship, the Hopkins Anderson Award for Excellence in Theatre, and an Individual Artist Grant from the D.C. Arts Commission. She spearheaded the Actors Arena through Arena Stage, a continuing education program for professional actors. Do you want to add more television comedy credits to your resume? Instructor Michael D. Cohen applies his unique holistic approach to comedy to help you bring your unique truth, aliveness and playfulness to your work. Learn specific techniques for analyzing a scene for comedy, nailing the jokes, tone and pacing, and make acting choices that respect the writers yet make you stand out in the casting session. This is a hands-on workshop in which a few members will be asked from the audience to work at the front of the room.

You may bring a comedic monologue or a prepared scene if you wish to volunteer.

About Michael D. Cohen 
Michael D. Cohen is a series regular on Nickelodeon's award winning hit sit-com Henry Danger. He has appeared on Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls, The Real O'Neals, The Mindy Project and many other episodic. Recent film credits include Suburbicon directed by George Clooney, the Oscar-nominated film Whiplash, and It Was You Charlie for which he was nominated for ACTRA’s Best Lead Performance award. As an acting coach, Michael is a faculty lecturer for the University of Texas at Austin in Hollywood, and also teaches through his own studio the Michael D. Cohen Acting Studio in Los Angeles.

Come and learn from an artist that not only loves the craft, but is currently working and applying all that will be taught in this intense workshop.
