School of Visual Arts, Division of Continuing Education presents an evening open to all on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, focusing on personalities and organizations that provide opportunities for performance and art in public spaces.


This free event, at SVA Theatre, 333 West 23 Street in Manhattan, will feature a discussion including Camille Zamora, opera singer and co-founder of Sing for Hope, an arts organization that connects artists, music and the city streets; Juan Williams, director of Youth Services for the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which provides social services, community and arts programming to LGBTQ youth, and whose participants painted a piano to be donated to a public space (one of the popular programs initiated by Sing for Hope); Joan Di Lieto, a celebrated visual artist who also engages in public art installations, Joan was instrumental in the HMI piano painting for Sing for Hope; and Kendal Henry, director and curator of New York City’s Percent for Art program, a city initiative responsible for sculpting 18 new monuments of notable women. Moderated by media personality Valerie Smaldone, “Takin’ it to the Streets” will also feature giveaway items furnished by MOVE, a design collective.


Portraits of demonstrators participating in marches across New York City after the 2016 election, photographed by Stacy Arezou Mehrfar, will be displayed in light boxes located throughout the theater lobby. A reception and performance will follow the presentation and panel discussion.
