A free webinar to help journalists prepare for and react to physical threats.

Thursday, June 4, 8 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. CT / 11 a.m. ET

Join IWMF and CPJ for a webinar, “Strategies for Safely Covering Protests,” this Thursday at 11 AM ET.

Hosted by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) this free webinar will be led by journalist safety experts Jean-François Belzil, Alison Baskerville and Colin Pereira, and highlight strategies to help journalists stay safe while covering protests, including how to prepare for and react to threats against their physical safety. The discussion will also provide guidance specifically tailored to covering protests during a pandemic, and situations that women journalists and journalists of color may encounter in the field.

Jean-François Belzil is the IWMF's security director. For 6 years, he has worked to support the safety of journalists all over the world, as a security advisor in high-risk areas in Latin America and Africa. He served in the Canadian army for over 10 years and in 2012, he received Canada's Star of Military Valor.

Alison Baskerville is a former soldier-turned artist and documentary photographer. She is founder of the safety training movement ROAAAR. In her work, she covers gender equality, military occupation, female identity in the forces, and the long-term consequences of armed conflict.

Colin Pereira works with CPJ Emergencies as the chief strategist on journalist safety. For 15 years, he has worked to shape the risk management model for journalists under threat. Pereira has advised press teams covering wars, natural disasters, terrorism and riots globally, and has worked on high risk investigations.
Journalists looking for up-to-date advice on covering protests safely can check out CPJ’s latest safety advisory, and safety kit with physical, psychosocial, and digital safety tips.
