The SAG-AFTRA San Francisco-Northern California spring 2018 membership meeting was held April 16 at the Delancey Street Restaurant in San Francisco. As part of the pre-meeting events, Local President Kathryn Howell and Local Executive Director Sean Taylor headed up a brief orientation for new members and an eligible performer mixer, giving pre-members the opportunity to interact with SAG-AFTRA members and learn about the benefits of union membership.

Students, news professionals and faculty came together at California State University, Fresno on April 28 for a daylong conference on how to navigate a career in broadcasting. Three panels were presented, Behind the Scenes, The Business of the News Business and Getting Your First Job. Panelists talked about how they broke into the field of broadcasting and explained what it takes to be successful in the broadcast industry.

On Jan. 21, members of the San Francisco-Northern California Local and their guests gathered at the Delancey Street Foundation in San Francisco to celebrate the 24th annual SAG Awards, which honors the best performances in film and television. This is the third consecutive year the local has held the SAG Awards viewing party at Delancey Street, and the shindig was highlighted by a red carpet photo opportunity area, catered appetizers and giveaways.

The SAG-AFTRA San Francisco-Northern California Local took part in the MLK2018 Labor and Community Breakfast on Jan. 15. The Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Foundation hosts San Francisco’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations. This year marks the 50th year since King’s assassination.

The San Francisco-Northern California Local held its second biannual membership meeting in downtown Oakland. About 75 members attended, the largest group in recent history for the local. Special attendees to the meeting were Alex Marqusee, senior legislative analyst for Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney, and Jim MacIlvaine, special events coordinator at the Oakland Film Office, who greeted the members and welcomed them to the East Bay.

The SAG-AFTRA San Francisco-Northern California Local continues its sponsorship of the Mill Valley Film Festival, now in its 40th year of existence. Outlets reported that this year’s film festival drew a record 75,000-plus attendees, who flocked to Marin County to get an early glimpse at contenders for the upcoming film awards season, discover some of the world’s best films, and celebrate the many talented local actors and filmmakers in the Bay Area.

What is an actor’s brand? A Sept. 11 workshop at the San Francisco-Northern California Local aimed to help performers find out more about themselves to discover their “brand.” Facilitated by Erika Pérez, the class helped performers learn what they project when they walk into a room, how others perceive them and how they might use that information to increase their odds of being cast.

For 24 years, San Francisco’s LaborFest has been an opportunity for Northern California unions to demonstrate the value of their workers to the public. As part of the world’s largest union of entertainment and media professionals, the SAG-AFTRA San Francisco-Northern California Local presented a workshop focused on public speaking and earning coverage from journalists at 580 Valencia on July 28.

Friends of the San Francisco Film Commission presented the first annual Robin Williams Award for Excellence in Entertainment to San Francisco writer-director-producer Chris Columbus on Feb. 9. Columbus and Williams worked together on multiple films, including locally filmed hits “Bicentennial Man” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Presentation of the award included honoring the career of Columbus as well as showcasing iconic film industry talent in San Francisco.
