We are writing to share the very sad news that SAG-AFTRA President Ken Howard has passed away.
Ken was a brilliant actor and a visionary entertainer. From his Tony-winning performance in Child’s Play to his Emmy-winning role in Grey Gardens, he was the consummate professional widely respected and admired by his peers throughout the industry. The White Shadow, which he co-created and starred in, was years ahead of its time and set an early standard for diverse casting and socially relevant content.
But it was as a union leader that Ken realized his greatest role in life. Running successfully for the board and then the presidency of Screen Actors Guild, merging the unions, and serving the membership as president of SAG-AFTRA were among the highlights of his life. Nothing meant more to him than SAG-AFTRA members.
Ken himself summed it up best when he said,
“And never forget how lucky we truly are. It is a great blessing to do the work that we love and to know that it moves people. Entertainment and media changes lives. It changed mine and through my work, maybe I have changed someone else’s.”
We are all mourning now, but rest assured that our team is committed to honoring Ken Howard’s memory and his legacy of working to ensure a stable and powerful SAG-AFTRA. We will be in touch with information regarding a memorial service for Ken when that information is available.
In unity and looking forward,
Gabrielle Carteris, Acting President
