Save the date! The Conservatory Committee of the New Orleans Local will host its fourth Scene to Screen (S2S) on Monday, June 11. Our S2S encourages local screenwriters to hear professional actors read their screenplays while offering SAG-AFTRA actors an opportunity to hone their cold reading skills and network with fellow union members.

The SAG-AFTRA New Orleans Local Conservatory Committee hosted a Scene to Screen (S2S) reading of David Margulis’ screenplay Maw Maw’s Goo. The reading occurred at Second Line Studios in the Lower Garden District on March 19.

The local’s third S2S gave 19 local SAG-AFTRA members the opportunity to read roles from Maw Maw’s Goo. The S2S format allows local SAG-AFTRA actors to hone their cold-reading skills and network with fellow union members. It also encourages local screenwriters to hear professional actors read their screenplays.

As your local president, I want to make sure you’re taking full advantage of your membership in Louisiana and Mississippi. Here are some tips I’d like to share about the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and the new direct deposit option for TV/Theatrical residual payments.

Here are two steps to participate in more SAG-AFTRA Foundation programs, in-person or online:

SAG-AFTRA members and staff attended the inaugural Louisiana Entertainment Summit in Baton Rouge on March 27 to celebrate the state’s motion picture and music tax incentive programs. The main takeaway from the event was “Film = Jobs.” There are currently 17 productions filming in the state, employing principal and background actors. NCIS: New Orleans alone has spent $6 million on wages for background actors over the past four years.

More than 65 SAG-AFTRA members participated in a SAG-AFTRA Foundation event held at the University of New Orleans on March 24–25. Casting directors Christian Kaplan, Jason Kennedy, Brent Caballero and Matthew Morgan, along with voiceover artist Paul Liberti, led sessions that allowed members to display their talents and get advice from these working professionals.

The #AdsGoUnion commercials organizing initiative is a member-driven campaign working to protect and increase union commercial work. With the help of SAG-AFTRA members like you, we can promote and enforce our contracts, including the New Orleans Local Regional Code.
