Support Women Artists Now — SWAN — Day is an annual international day celebrating women’s creativity in all its forms. Started and organized by WomenArts, a nonprofit arts service organization dedicated to helping women artists get the resources they need to do their creative work, this year’s SWAN Day Houston was sponsored by the SAG-AFTRA National Women’s Committee and the Houston-Austin Local.

SAG-AFTRA member Sean Pratt, a career coach for actors and audiobook narrators, presented Let Me Tell You a Story: An Introduction to the Audiobook Industry for Austin Actors Conservatory on Sunday, Feb. 20. Pratt gave inside advice on how working actors can expand their skillsets and career opportunities in the thriving audiobook market, where he has built a successful niche. Pratt shared his insights on the best internet resources for finding work, standards for making an audiobook narration demo reel and basic equipment needs for creating an at-home recording booth.

Dear Member,

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have taken a tragic toll throughout the Gulf Coast affecting hundreds of thousands of people including members of our SAG-AFTRA family.

And like family, it is imperative to support each other in times of need. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation and the SAG-AFTRA Motion Picture Players Welfare Fund have set up a fund to help members impacted by the storms.

Residents of Texas and Louisiana are currently experiencing record floodwaters which have taken lives and continue to cause unprecedented damage in the region due to the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Please note that A+ Actors of Texas has surrendered its SAG-AFTRA franchise effective August 1, 2017, under the SAG Codified Agency Regulations Rule 16(g).

The effect of the surrender is as follows:

No member of SAG-AFTRA may hereafter engage, use, or deal through this agency.

All contracts in force between this agency and the members of SAG-AFTRA are ipso facto and without further notice terminated except that the agency may retain and collect any commissions earned under said contracts prior to the surrender of franchise.

Member leaders in Houston targeted the next generation of performers this spring with presentations on April 20 at the University of Houston and on April 28 at Worldfest. The discussions focused on the union’s contract provisions and what it takes to become a SAG-AFTRA member.

Meanwhile, on April 9, the Austin Actors Conservatory featured member-training workshops on Michael Chekhov techniques for acting and stunt careers, as well as cold reads with regional casting directors Toni Cobb-Brock and Sally Allen on May 21.

The Austin Script2Screen Team is currently accepting film submissions for their August read. The Script2Screen series is a LIVE read by professional actors of unproduced film or TV scripts before an industry audience. Scripts are rehearsed, directed and performed by professionals before casting directors, producers, directors, potential investors and industry pros for one performance only.
