Aloha,

Two years ago, I was elected to serve as an alternate on the Executive Committee of the National Board. Recently, I was elected to serve as a full member of the EC. I am honored and grateful by the support of the National Board. I promise to represent our local and members to the best of my ability.

Here are a few things your National Board has been working on.

Aloha Member,

The following is a recap of what the Legislative Committee has been doing for the previous few months.

Executive Director Brenda Ching and I, along with Irish Barber, a business agent from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, attended a special breakfast with Sen. Mazie Hirono that was hosted by the Hawaii State AFL-CIO.

Sen. Hirono was in excellent spirits, in spite of her recent cancer diagnosis. She outlined her immediate agenda and thoughts about Hawaii’s future.

On Nov. 16, the Hawaii Local Conservatory sponsored a free industry event, Your Career: Representation, Training and Opportunity. By all accounts, it was a huge success with more than 80 members in attendance.

SAG-AFTRA National Director/Senior Counsel, Professional Representatives Zino Macaluso served as moderator. He shared his experience, expertise and humor, as he covered representation, commissions, work opportunities, training and whether or not you can make a living as an actor in this market.

Congratulations to John Nordlum on his retirement from the local board! John started his service as a board member and officer on the Screen Actors Guild Hawaii Branch board in 1988. He took a year off in 1989 and returned the following year, where he served until we merged the unions in 2012. He was elected to serve on the first SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local Board until 2017. John’s accomplishments in the business are many. He was Jack Lord’s double on the original Hawaii 5-0 and worked as a stunt performer and double on numerous theatrical and television shows.

The local’s activities continue on a strong and united path. Members were offered many opportunities to gather together to learn and strengthen their craft. In May, they learned about diversity and the influence of Asians and Asian-Americans on the film industry. They had the opportunity to attend the Casting Access Project workshops sponsored by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation in June.

Kimee Balmilero did an improv workshop on July 13 and I heard she had the room jumping. We hope to bring her back soon.

I did an Audition Clinic on July 21. We had the good fortune to have member Dennis Chun drop by. Dennis, along with other local cast members Taylor Wily and Kimee, were named series regulars on Hawaii 5-0. Congratulations to our local actors! Dennis told the class how important it is to study and practice their craft. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you will be.

In case you were not aware, Hawaii offers a tax incentive to TV and motion picture companies that shoot here on the islands. More productions equals more work for actors, crew and drivers.

The SAG Awards viewing party of the Hawaii Local was held at the Ko’olau Ballrooms on Jan. 29. Over 40 members and guests came together to take in the red-carpet program and the 2017 SAG Awards live, which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
