SAG-AFTRA Members in Illinois:

Many of you may recall that in 2015-2016 attempts were made to create so-called Right-to-Work “zones” around the state of Illinois. Fortunately, activists and unions around the state mobilized to fight these measures and none were successful. Anticipating a new round of such attempts, legislation was introduced earlier this year which would prohibit Right-to-Work zones in Illinois. Both houses of the legislature passed the bill (SB1905), then Governor Rauner vetoed it.

Start: 11/14/2017 - 5:30pm
End: 11/14/2017 - 8:00pm

New members represent the future for SAG-AFTRA. The more knowledgeable they are, the stronger our union and all members are. The goal of the New Members Subcommittee of SAG-AFTRA Chicago's Community Outreach, Community Organizing committee is to educate, engage and empower professional actors from the moment they become union members. The new member orientation event is only one part of that process. Topics covered include every step involved in the union experience, from initiation fees and the dues structure to the correct way to execute member reports and contracts.

Start: 10/22/2017 - 11:00am
End: 10/22/2017 - 4:00pm

As part of a series of events focusing on casting opportunities for actors who have been historically overlooked in the entertainment industry, Casting Society of America (CSA) Diversity Committee will focus this month on *transgender performers. Performers will be given an opportunity to do a two-page prepared scene in front of a panel of two to three CSA casting directors. Please note, the reading will be taped and the reading is NOT for a job opportunity.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events raise money for the American Cancer Society's efforts to save lives and raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, as well as to honor survivors and remember those lost to breast cancer. Please join our team and walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, and help us make it a special, fun day. If you can't join us, consider making a donation to help this wonderful cause.

We have been deeply struck by the magnitude of the devastation from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and have been thinking about what we can do to help. SAG-AFTRA Chicago Local is proud to partner with Creative Relief, a group made up of Chicago’s creative agencies, in a united effort to raise funds for this cause.

In July, the Chicago Local hosted a captivating seminar led by actor and director Dawn Arnold to teach members the Michael Chekhov acting technique. Chekhov’s method is a way for actors to express personality and to find an inner life for a character before a performance. Actors tap into their creativity to create a character’s identity, including imagination, intellect and emotions.
