“Scene Study Workout” – presented by Xavier Owens

Actors always need to stay sharp in their craft. Yet seldom do we ever come together to give our skills a "workout" . . . which is precisely the purpose of this workshop. It will allow us to meet and present scenes and monologues to a group that will provide feedback and constructive criticism. Haven't we all had those times where we would've benefited from getting the opinion of another trained ear? Be it a long rehearsed piece or a cold reading, we will be able to work our material with other actors in a safe environment.

The only requirements are that you bring at least one scene (max 2-person scenes for now) and, if you'd like, a monologue as well. They must be on paper, not just memorized! But most importantly, bring an open mind with a willingness to get up there and work out!

Xavier Owens, a New York City native, has been a professional actor for 20 years. He holds numerous credits in film, television as well as theatre. He's studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, the Public Theater and the Harlem School of the Arts. He spent three years teaching acting classes and directing main stage productions for Centerstage Academy in Yorktown, Virginia.

Glenn Cannon Celebration of Life ServiceMore Info

On Saturday, May 25, the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and Kennedy Theatre will host a celebration of life for former Hawaii Branch President and SAG-AFTRA Co-President Glenn Cannon at the University’s Kennedy Theatre at 3 p.m. Members of the film, television and theater communities will gather to remember Cannon, who passed away on April 20. The theater will open its doors at 2:30 p.m. with open seating.

Cannon served as President and board member of the Hawaii Branch of Screen Actors Guild for more than 20 years. More recently, he was the co-president of the newly merged SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local.

Cannon was a fixture in Honolulu’s theatrical community, regularly directing and acting at theatres in Honolulu and winning dozens of Po’okela Awards from the Hawaii State Theatre Council. His stage and television career spanned over fifty years, most notably for his recurring roles in the original Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum P.I. as well as roles on more recent shows, including Lost.

Cannon mentored several generations of young actors. Days after his death, his Facebook page was filled with former students recalling his influence and wishing his family well. He touched the lives of thousands of students, actors and audiences throughout his career.

Come and celebrate the life of our fearless leader who touched our lives as an actor, director, mentor and educator. He was a stable force in our local union.

Cannon’s family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to support the students of the UH Theatre and Dance program. Checks may be made payable to: UH Foundation with a notation “For the Glenn Cannon Endowment Fund” and mailed to the University of Hawaii Foundation, P.O. Box 1270, Honolulu, HI 96828-0270.

Thank you.

Here's your opportunity to get one-on-one advice from some of the top agents in town! Each member will spend five minutes one-on-one with an agent for on-camera auditioning, five minutes one-on-one with an agent for voiceover critiques and 10 minutes with an agent discussing headshots and self-marketing material.

Agents scheduled to participate are:

  • O/C: Dawn Gray - Gray Talent Group, Stephanie Potakis - Lily's Talent Agency
  • V/O: Brett Sechrist - Naked Voices, Ed Cox - Ambassador Talent
  • Headshots: Wade Childress - Stewart Talent

This is going to be a fast-paced, closely timed conservatory, so we need to do some preproduction to make sure it all goes smoothly. Here's what you'll need to do.

  1. RSVP to Kathy Byrne at kathy.byrne@sagaftra.org. Space is limited.
  2. Send Kathy a pdf of your headshot and resume. This will be shared with the on-camera agents so they know what type of copy to bring for you.
  3. For the voiceover agent, you will need to send an mp3 of no more than 30 seconds of whatever voiceover work you think you're best at (i.e. commercial, narration, etc).
  4. Don't have an mp3? No problem, just schedule a time to come to the KMRC by June 5 and you'll get assistance in making one.
  5. The day of the event, please bring additional hard copy headshots and resumes for the agents. YOU MUST BE ON TIME. We are scheduling members in half-hour increments. If you miss your time slot, there's no way to make it up. Just come early and you'll have no worries.

As these events are free, reservations fill up fast. A waiting list will be used. If you can't make it, please cancel your reservation with as much notice as possible - minimum 24 hours - so another member may benefit by attending this event.
