Accomplished composer Alan Silvestri was lauded by his peers at a special evening in his honor on October 27.
Organized by Screen Actors Guild Hollywood Singers Committee, Meet the Composer III took place at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills and highlighted Silvestri’s contributions to film and television, including CHiPs, Starsky and Hutch, the Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, The Abyss, Predator, Stuart Little, and many others.
Sally Stevens, right, winner of the 2011 Society of Singers Voice Award, introduced Silvestri.
“There are a lot of people who are really good at what they do. Well, Alan is good at just about everything. He’s a Renaissance man,” she said.
In an onstage discussion with Stevens, Silvestri shared stories from his life and shared some of the secrets of his success. He said that when he isn’t composing, he is busy learning everything he can about the latest technology in a rapidly changing industry. He made it clear, however, that the technology is simply a means to an end.
“There is a part of me that is very old-fashioned — I’m a great believer in quality,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
The evening was complimented with performances of some of Silvestri’s work, including music from Polar Express, Beowulf and Hannah Montana: The Movie.
The SAG Hollywood Singers Committee is chaired by Dawnn Lewis, below left, with Silvestri and Glenn Hiraoka, national director of SAG Stunt, Singers, Dancers & Safety.
