Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW), the AFL-CIO, the Building and Construction Trades Department’s Committee for Women in the Trades and the Centre for Research in Equality and Diversity at Queen Mary, University of London, invite members to a presentation and discussion with authors Gill Kirton, Geraldine Healy and Mary Gatta on their new book, Gender and Leadership in Unions (http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415887045/), with remarks from AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler.
WOW’s Mary Gatta and her colleagues from Queen Mary College, Rutgers University and Cornell University participated in an innovative trade union exchange program for women leaders as part of a larger study, where they explored the meaning and experience of trade union women leaders. In this presentation, the researchers will share similarities and differences in equality strategies pursued by unions in the U.S. and U.K. They will discuss the experiences of women union members and the impact on their leadership. Immediately after the presentation Shulerwill provide remarks and open up a larger discussion on gender and leadership in unions.
