Description:  Want to sharpen your skills as a storyteller? Enjoy performing to adoring audiences?  Come find out more about BookPALS, a national organization of professional actors who use their skills to foster the joy of reading in public school classrooms, homeless shelters, and anywhere children gather. BookPALS bring their talents to events such as Read Across America, family literacy programs such as Project Read, and monthly performances at Oakland’s Children’s Fairyland. Most importantly, BookPALS practice their craft and make a big difference in the lives children who need the magic of stories!

 

11 a.m. - noon — BookPALS Basics: NEW BookPALS discover how our wonderful program works, learn more about our mission of nurturing a love of reading in children and explore how reading helps sharpen actors’ skills. Experienced BookPALS who would enjoy a refresher are also welcome. 

 

Noon - 1:30 p.m. — BookPALS Inspiration: New and returning BookPALS hone storytelling and cold reading skills, discover new books and reading ideas and inspire one another to bring stories to life. This is your opportunity to kick off the new school year in style, with food, fun, prizes and celebrate all that you do!

·         Class size is limited to 20 members

·         Participants will be randomly selected from those who respond with preference given to those who have not attended Conservatory events in the past year.

·         As a courtesy to members on the waiting list, if you have reserved a space in this workshop and cannot attend, please cancel your reservation no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9.  Failure to do so may result in the inability to attend future workshops.

·         There is no charge for this event

 

Directions/Parking: Public transportation is available. There is limited metered street parking as well as self-pay parking garages nearby.

BookPALS is a national program administered by the nonprofit Screen Actors Guild Foundation. BookPALS help children learn to LOVE books by bringing the talents of performer volunteers into classrooms, shelters and other venues.

This workshop is only open to paid-up SAG-AFTRA members in good standing – no guests are allowed. Parents/guardians of performers under 18 years old are welcome. SAG-AFTRA members, please bring your membership card (paid thru Oct. 31, 2013) for admittance.
