Joint Statement Re: Claims Under SAG/AFTRA Joint Bargaining Agreement

During the course of the past three weeks. and pursuant to the Joint Bargaining Agreement between AFTRA and SAG prohibiting disparagement of either union by officers or representatives of the other, AFTRA filed claims against SAG and SAG filed a claim against AFTRA as a result of statements made by elected officers of one union about the other.  In accordance with, and guided by, a prior ruling of the neutral umpire, the unions hereby issue the following joint statement:

"In the course of the recent SAG election, officers of Screen Actors Guild issued written and video statements regarding AFTRA, which violated the terms of the AFL-CIO facilitated agreement between AFTRA and SAG prohibiting disparagement of either union by officers or representatives of the other. The statements made by these officers do not reflect the policies, beliefs or intentions of the Screen Actors Guild and Screen Actors Guild disavows any statements made by SAG officials suggesting a negative comparison between AFTRA and Screen Actors Guild contracts, the unions' respective benefits programs or advocacy on behalf of their respective members.  In response to a reporter's question as published in an online publication, and in the context of specifically refusing to discuss Screen Actors Guild, an AFTRA officer used words suggesting that the Screen Actors Guild has "serious problems", which violated the terms of the AFL-CIO facilitated agreement between AFTRA and SAG prohibiting disparagement of either union by officers or representatives of the other. That comment was not intended in any way to be critical of Screen Actors Guild, its officers or portray the SAG in a negative light. AFTRA regrets any negative impression this comment may have caused, and affirms that it does not reflect the policies, beliefs or intentions of AFTRA or its officers towards SAG."
