Important Information For Young Performers in NY

Dear SAG Young Performer, Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday, Governor Cuomo signed a bill into law that will extend the validity of child performer work permits from six months to one year.  A7630/S3965, entitled “Validity of Child Performer Work Permits”, was introduced at the request of the Department of Labor by Assembly members WRIGHT, WEINSTEIN and ABBATE.

The passage of this bill means that all permits issued after 7/21/2011 will now be for the duration of one year.  Permits currently in effect will remain so until their expiration.   All requirements associated with obtaining a permit remain the same as under the six month permit system.

It is our continued desire to see a full and complete set of regulations to accompany the Child Performer Education and Trust Act implemented as soon as possible.   It is our understanding that the Department of Labor will begin talks with all interested parties in the very near future.  As soon as we receive notification of the beginning of those talks, SAG will hold meetings with parents and agents prior to, and after any such meetings.

If you have any other questions regarding the implementation of this law, please call the Permit and Certificate Program of the Division of Labor Standards at (518) 457-1942.  You also can send your question by e-mail to: CPinfo@labor.state.ny.us
