Joint Statement from AFM, AFTRA, DGA, IATSE, SAG and Teamsters On PROTECT IP Act

Los Angeles (May 12, 2011) – American Federation of Musicians (AFM), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), Directors Guild of America (DGA), International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada (IATSE), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and International Brotherhood of Teamsters today released the following statement:

Shattering Asian American Stereotypes

We have all seen the Asian stereotypes in film and television: the nerdy student, the submissive lotus blossom, the sinister Fu-Manchu or Dragon Lady type. On May 10, 2011, in honor of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Screen Actors Guild Affirmative Action & Diversity invited a group of distinguished Asian American entertainment industry professionals to the SAG national headquarters in Los Angeles to discuss how to overcome the stereotypical portrayal of — and lack of portrayals of— Asians in television and film.

Important Information Regarding the SAG/AFTRA Non-Broadcast/Industrial/Educational Contract Referendum

On behalf of the Joint AFTRA/SAG Negotiating Committee and members of the National Board of Screen Actors Guild and the National Administration Committee of AFTRA, we are pleased to enclose for your ratification on the terms for successor agreements to the AFTRA and SAG Non-Broadcast/Industrial/Educational Contracts. These new agreements, if ratified by the joint memberships, will be effective as of May 1, 2011 and continue through April 30, 2014.
