ACTRA Toronto Congratulates SAG-AFTRA on Successful Merger

ACTRA Toronto congratulates SAG and AFTRA on the successful vote to merge their two unions.

I want to congratulate the leadership of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) on their successful merger election. The new union SAG-AFTRA will strengthen the voice of actors, performers and broadcasters in the entertainment industry at a time when corporations have inordinate power and tremendous resources at their disposal.  It is even more important that the men and women who work in this industry have a greater capacity to protect their wages, health care, retirement and basic rights.

AEA Hails SAG-AFTRA Merger

AEA congratulates the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists on their historic merger. By an overwhelming majority, the members of both Unions have affirmed that they are stronger standing together than separately, and that collectively, they can face the challenges of the labor-media landscape and improve wages, working conditions, benefits and work opportunities for their members with one powerful voice.

ACTRA APPLAUDS SAG-AFTRA MERGER VOTE

The Alliance of Canadian Cinema Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) welcomes the results of a successful merger vote between U.S. screen performers’ unions SAG and AFTRA. With SAG members voting 82% in favour of the merger and AFTRA members voting 86% in favour, the amalgamated union is now poised to tackle the challenges of a transformed media landscape.

Chris Keyser, President of the Writers Guild of America, West, issued the following statement today regarding the creation of SAG-AFTRA:

SAG, AFTRA Members Approve Merger to Form SAG-AFTRA

LOS ANGELES (March 30, 2012) — The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and Screen Actors Guild are pleased to announce that members of both organizations have overwhelmingly voted to approve a merger, creating a new entity, SAG-AFTRA. SAG members voted 82 percent in favor of the merger. AFTRA members favored the merger with 86 percent, exceeding the 60 percent threshold needed for both unions’ membership for passage.
