SAG-AFTRA Reports Results of Groundbreaking LGBT Study

Lessbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) actors face continued discrimination, even as workplace opportunities and conditions improve, according to a first-of-its kind report by SAG-AFTRA and UCLA’s Williams Institute. The report, titled, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Diversity in Entertainment: Experiences and Perspectives of SAG-AFTRA Members, found one-third of all survey respondents believed that casting directors, directors and producers may be biased against LGBT performers, and more than half of LGB performers had heard anti-gay comments on set.

Delegates Visit Resource Expo on Day 1

Day 1 of the SAG-AFTRA National Convention included an Information and Resource Expo at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE. The expo featured exhibitions by committees, departments and resources and programs available to SAG-AFTRA members in all categories. Convention delegates, staff and guests mingled and networked in the expo hall learning about the many resources, benefits and protections available to union members. 
 

Trumka Addresses SAG-AFTRA Delegates

The inaugural SAG-AFTRA National Convention kicked off Thursday, Sept. 26 with a welcome by newly elected National President Ken Howard and a rousing keynote speech by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

SAG-AFTRA Inaugural Convention Kicks Off

SAG-AFTRA kicked off its first national convention Wednesday at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, with a welcome reception hosted by the Los Angeles Local, featuring an address from special guest Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Addressing guests and delegates, Garcetti  reminded them he is a member of SAG-AFTRA and proudly displayed his membership card. Other featured guest speakers and SAG-AFTRA members included CBS2 news anchor Pat Harvey and actor Jon Tenney.

SAG-AFTRA Announces Gabrielle Carteris Elected Executive Vice President at National Convention

Los Angeles (Sept. 26, 2013)—SAG-AFTRA today announced that Gabrielle Carteris has been elected as executive vice president of the union. Carteris was elected to the two-year term at the inaugural SAG-AFTRA Convention in Los Angeles. Her term begins immediately.

A total of 303 ballots were cast in the election that consisted of three candidates. Carteris received 66.5 percent of the vote, Mike Hodge received 23.22 percent, Jane Austin received 10.28 percent. Millie Wright was also a candidate.

Los Angeles (Sept. 24, 2013) – SAG-AFTRA will present a wide array of 20 professional development programs, as well as a special keynote panel, at its inaugural national convention taking place Sept. 26-29 at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE.
