Screen Actors Guild today voiced its support for actions by the office of the Los Angeles City Attorney and the State labor commissioner, which are cracking down on unlawful fees charged by background casting businesses.
In all, cease-and-desist letters were sent to 14 background casting companies on Wednesday, warning that requiring actors to pay a fee for access to work is a violation of California labor law. L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich sent the letters to background casting companies operating in the city, with the goal of achieving industry-wide compliance.
On behalf of the Joint AFTRA/SAG Negotiating Committee and members of the National Board of Screen Actors Guild and the National Administration Committee of AFTRA, we are pleased to enclose for your ratification on the terms for successor agreements to the AFTRA and SAG Non-Broadcast/Industrial/Educational Contracts. Los Angeles, (April 30, 2011) – The Screen Actors Guild National Board of Directors today unanimously approved the creation of a Merger Task Force to work with their AFTRA counterparts in developing a formal plan to unite SAG and AFTRA members in one union.
The SAG and AFTRA Presidents’ Forum for One Union has been holding Listening Tour meetings throughout the country to get input from members, and three additional dates have been set.
