The Nashville Local Remembers George Jones

“I am proud to call George and Nancy Jones my friends. George was so much more than a country music icon. He was never afraid to stand and act on what he believed in. George was instrumental in helping organize TNN (The Nashville Network), testified at the FCC hearings on media consolidation, and even wrote a letter of support to country DJ’s at an AFTRA Twin Cities radio station. Thank you George, for sharing your voice and music with us, for your continual support of all recordings artists and musicians, and for giving us so many memories that will never fade.

SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local Mourns Passing of President Glenn Cannon

The SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local mourns the passing of Glenn Cannon on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Cannon, who, for more than 20 years, served as president and board member of the former Screen Actors Guild Hawaii Branch and as current co-president of the SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local. Born in Philadelphia, Cannon joined the union in the 1950s when he began his career in New York, acting in A Moon for the Misbegotten and The Good Woman of Setzuan on Broadway, as well as numerous off-Broadway and touring productions, including The Threepenny Opera and West Side Story.

SAG-AFTRA Mourns Passing of AFTRA Nashville Lifetime Achievement Honoree Hugh Gordon Stoker

SAG-AFTRA mourns the loss of Hugh Gordon Stoker. Stoker was born in 1924 in Gleason, TN, and began his music career at the age of 15 playing piano on WSM radio. After a stint in the Air Force, he returned to Nashville, and in 1949, joined the Gospel quartet , The Jordainaires , first as a piano player then as the group’s tenor. Following a concert in Memphis the group was approached by a then unknown singer named Elvis Presley, who asked them to be his backup singers  if he was ever signed to a major label.

SAG-AFTRA mourns the passing of New York stage, film and TV actor Martha Greenhouse, who served as a union leader for more than four decades. She passed away Jan. 5 at the age of 91.

Los Angeles (November 1, 2011) —  Screen Actors Guild mourns the passing of Gil Cates. Cates, a former Directors Guild of America president and past dean of the School of Theater, Film and Television at the University of California Los Angeles, died Monday. He was 77.
