Screen Actors Guild members and other high-profile entertainment industry luminaries are stepping up to show their support for America’s military families.
Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey are the latest to join with SAG, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America, West in supporting Joining Forces, an initiative created by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to support members of the armed forces and their families. The Inter-Guild Joining Forces Task Force is led by Academy Award-winning producer Bruce Cohen, who assembled the production teams to create the campaign.
The trio have recorded public service announcements that tell true-life stories of military families and encourage viewers to do their part to show these families they are not alone, and that their fellow countrymen are there for them. The PSAs feature a call to action from the First Lady to encourage Americans to get involved to support military families by visiting www.joiningforces.gov. The website resources were recently revamped to include thousands more ways that Americans can volunteer to serve in their own communities. Visitors can send messages of thanks, find opportunities to get involved and share stories of service.
In June, the guilds hosted the First Lady for a special Joining Forces event in Los Angeles. These PSAs are part of the pledge by the entertainment industry to do more to highlight the sacrifices of military families.
