As part of our on-going commitment to college outreach, SAG-AFTRA Washington–Mid Atlantic Local Associate Executive Director Jane Love traveled to Richmond, VA to talk with approximately 40 students in the Business of Theatre class at Virginia Commonwealth University on Thursday, November 8. Topics covered were the history and mission of the unions, eligibility requirements and costs, and the many benefits of membership.

On Thursday evening, Nov. 8, 2012 a crowd of 800 cast, crew, elected officials and other special guests gathered at Richmond's historic Byrd Theatre for the premiere of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln which opens everywhere on November 16.  Former Virginia Governor and the first African American US Governor since reconstruction, Douglas Wilder and current Virginia Governor and film industry supporter Bob McDonnell were present for the screening of this film shot entirely in the Commonwealth.

Simultaneous screenings were held in Los Angeles and Petersburg, Virginia.

We are very pleased to announce that this holiday season the SAG-AFTRA Washington - Mid Atlantic Local will be joining forces with the AFL-CIO, the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and Helmets to Hardhats in their 4th annual campaign to collect toys and monetary donations for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.

On the evening of Monday, November 5th, members and staff of the newly renamed Washington-Mid Atlantic Local came together for the first time under the merged union of SAG-AFTRA at the Rockville Hilton, in Rockville, Maryland. Members from every corner of the Local attended, including members from North Carolina, Richmond, and Baltimore. After everyone introduced themselves, Executive Director Pat O’Donnell went straight into business, discussing the many changes happening within the Local and around the country under the new union.

On the morning of Saturday, October 27, 2012, members of the DC Actors Unite to End Alzheimer’s team joined together with thousands of others to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on the National Mall. The DC-area team raised over $1,600 in support of the Alzheimer’s Association this year. Nationally, the Actors Unite to End Alzheimer's team has raised over $17,500 in 2012, and that number increases daily.

Unlike the ever changing faces on Capitol Hill, SAG-AFTRA Local Executive Board Member Dave McConnell has weathered eight presidential terms and numerous Congressional elections as WTOP’s Capitol Hill reporter. The Washington Post honored his past and continuing political coverage in a feature on the cover of its Style Section on October 29, 2012. Writer Tony Glaros followed McConnell around on his typical day covering all the happenings of Congress. McConnell has been the Capitol Hill reporter for WTOP since 1981, and has been with the station since 1965.

The Recording Artist and Singers Committee (RASCals) of the SAG-AFTRA Washington-Baltimore Local  sat down with Washington, DC area recording artists on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. The event titled Struggles of the Local Independent Music Community: A Conversation about Your Needs was a joint effort with Metro Music Source, an organization that brings together local music industry professionals for networking events, panels, and community support.

The Washington-Baltimore Local of SAG-AFTRA was one of the festival sponsors for this year’s DC Labor FilmFest, which “boasts an array of new films and beloved classics about work and workers across the globe.” Along with being a festival sponsor, SAG-AFTRA was one of the sponsors of the screenings of Billy Elliot, which revolves around the UK Miners’ Strike in the late 1980s. This year was the twelfth year of this festival, and is organized and sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Council of the AFL-CIO.
