Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley revealed his budget proposal on Jan. 16, in which he proposed an increase in funding for the Film Production Employment Act $7.5 million to $25 million for fiscal year 2014. This is a very exciting prospect for our Local and we will keep you informed on how you can help propel this through the legislative process.

Richard Jefferies of Wiseacre Films (Elfman), Carl Glorioso of the Fredrick Film Office, Kurt Ubersax of KJU Productions and Eduardo Sanchez of Haxan Films (Lovely Molly) will be holding a panel to discuss independent film in Maryland and present their views on the future of the film and television industries. It is an honor to have them at our meeting and have them share their insight! 

Join host Bruce McBarnette and other local actors as they watch the live broadcast of the SAG Awards, view artwork, win prizes and meet diplomats. Enjoy wine, refreshments, and the art of physiognomy (face reading) performed by Gail Romiti.

It was with great pleasure that the SAG-AFTRA Washington – Mid Atlantic Local joined with the AFL-CIO, the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and Helmets to Hardhats in this year’s campaign for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.  While the total donation count amongst all of the organizations in the campaign is still being calculated, it is estimated that the Washington–Mid Atlantic Local raised thousands of dollars in toys and monetary donations.

On the evening of Saturday, November 17, 2012, the annual TIVA-DC’s Peer Awards was held at the National Press Club, attended by 300 local production professionals. This year’s awards ceremony was hosted by SAG-AFTRA member Arch Campbell of WJLA, and presenters included members Monika Samtani, Tara Garwood, Rick Kain and Ken Arnold. The Peer Awards, which began in l997, is co-sponsored by the SAG-AFTRA Mid-Atlantic Local in order to recognize our members in the DC area for their outstanding work in media production.

The SAG-AFTRA Washington – Mid Atlantic Local will be hosting a holiday open house for its members at the local office. Light refreshments will be provided. We only ask that you bring a new, unwrapped toy or monetary donation for the local’s Toys for Tots campaign. Meet your staff and fellow members, see your local office, and bring the gift of joy to a child all in one day.

MusiCares and Smile Programs are proud to partner to provide a dental clinic offering dental screenings, teeth cleaning, and x-rays to uninsured music professionals in need. These treatments will be provided free of charge to pre-screened pre-approved applicants on a first come-first served basis. Those wishing to take advantage of this service must be able to provide documentation of their work in the music industry for at least 5 years.

A crowd of approximately 80 actors, filmmakers and other film industry professionals gathered on Tuesday night, November 13, 2012 at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille in Charlotte, North Carolina to hear Washington–Mid Atlantic Associate Executive Director Jane Love speak about the benefits of membership, the mechanics of joining as well as how filmmakers can work with SAG-AFTRA professionals even on very low budget projects.

Thursday, November 8 through Saturday, November 10, SAG-AFTRA Washington–Mid Atlantic Local staff members Lois Seffu and Thomas Young attended the Cucalorus Film Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Local was a proud business sponsor of this year’s festival and the staff was welcomed by North Carolina union members and attending filmmakers.
