Happy spring to our members in Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Washington state. 

The SAG-AFTRA Seattle Local has been busy the past six months. Our committees are active and we are focused on empowering and bettering the lives of performers and broadcasters in our local through member outreach, organizing around the corporate/educational waiver, and keeping our members engaged. Below are a few highlights of our events.

 Security Crisis. Since the beginning of 2014, the International News Safety Institute reported 234 journalists have been killed in the line of duty and more than a 1,000 have lost their lives in the last decade reporting the news. Threats, intimidation and even the potential risk of injury are standard operating procedure for many journalists in the pursuit to investigate and tell the stories and preserve the public’s right to know. The safety of broadcasters and journalists is quickly changing.

In order to build awareness of members’ work and to foster interest and collaboration with local producers and directors, the Northwest Screenwriters Guild is collaborating with the SAG-AFTRA Seattle Local Conservatory and The Film School for a Script and Actor Showcase. You will hear excerpts from NwSG members’ work performed by professional union actors, guided by some of your best local directors.

SEATTLE (March 7, 2016) — SAG-AFTRA members have ratified their first contract with KNKX 88.5 FM, one of the most popular public radio stations in the country. The members of the bargaining unit voted overwhelmingly to approve the contract. The deal includes a 6-percent wage increase over three years as well as significant improvements to the employer-sponsored healthcare and vacation benefits.

Each year hundreds of creative industry professionals descend on the state Capitol in Olympia for Film Day, to meet with their state Senator and Representatives. These face-to-face conversations have proven to be one of the most powerful ways in which we convey the important impact our industry has statewide.

Seattle Local members and area performers attended a panel discussion on stunt and on set safety on Oct. 23, hosted by the SAG-AFTRA Seattle Conservatory. Moderated by Seattle Local President Rik Deskin, the panel featured Assistant Director Tony Bucerra (The Man in the High Castle), and member and stunt performer Peter Tiemann.
