Nearly a hundred millennial SAG-AFTRA members checked in at Burbank’s Story Tavern for a NextGen Performers networking mixer on Jan. 30. The young members subcommittee organizes mixers specifically tailored to members ages 18–35, providing them with an opportunity to meet one another, brainstorm projects and ideas, and build a supportive working community in a challenging industry. As in past mixers, which have included taco Tuesdays, bowling outings and drag queen bingo, snacks and activities were complimentary and a cash bar was available for beverages.

A festive Los Angeles singers mixer and caroling session, organized by the SAG-AFTRA Los Angeles Singers Committee, was held at SAG-AFTRA Plaza on Dec. 19. Prior to the mixer, attendees brought holiday cheer to staff, visiting each floor to perform Christmas carols and other holiday songs, all acapella. Each year, this effort brightens the faces of SAG-AFTRA employees and follows a committee directive to give back to staff.

To celebrate the arrival of new contract books, the Los Angeles Commercials Department hosted an open house for signatory producers, payroll companies, production companies, casting directors and agents on Jan. 22. The event was well attended and provided a unique opportunity for the union to build stronger relationships with our industry partners. Be sure to get your hands on a copy of the new commercial contract book and familiarize yourself with the details. Knowledge is power and ours is a strong membership!

On Jan. 27, SAG-AFTRA partnered with the Osborne Head & Neck Institute to offer a unique one-day workshop on how to protect — and get the most out of — these two tiny folds of tissue.

The SAG-AFTRA MOVE L.A. Committee presented Career Marketing Now!, a panel featuring seasoned casting directors, actors and talent managers who provided inside tips and marketing wisdom to members at SAG-AFTRA Plaza on Nov. 16. Each panelist shared experiences regarding the casting process and provided practical hints on how to create a polished first impression with casting directors as well as with potential representation.

Dozens of SAG-AFTRA members joined the estimated 750,000 Angelinos in participating in the Second Annual Women’s March Los Angeles in downtown L.A. on Jan. 21. The SAG-AFTRA contingent surrounded the prominent SAG-AFTRA banner and was led by President Gabriel Carteris, Secretary-Treasurer and L.A. Local President Jane Austin, and Executive Vice President and New York Local President Rebecca Damon, the union’s top three officers. Joining SAG-AFTRA at the march were members of sister media and entertainment unions WGAW, IATSE and AFM.
